A Twitter-charged lunch

A Twitter-charged lunch

Last Wednesday, as Roger and myself arrived at a restaurant in Monterrey Mexico for a lunch meeting, news broke about a hijacked Aeromexico plane at Mexico City’s airport.

By the time we started our lunch with Ramón Alberto Garza, founder and CEO of IndigoMedia (and certainly one of the most proficent journalists in México), news coverage was taking over radio stations, and text alerts and phone calls from friends were rapidly becoming the conduit of news updates.

But we never thought such news event would become so entertaining. Our lunch table quickly became a news-reporting center, when each of us began receiving a flood of tweets, news alerts and retweets from friends and “followers.” The climax of the charade came when Ramón Alberto was simultaneously receiving calls from Indigo’s newsroom, tweeting news nuggets and retweeting my posts –all of it while reading the retweets that many of his followers were posting. In-between tweets and phone calls, we ate a nacho or two, and ordered our dessert.

I cannot help but reflect what would’ve been of our lunch without Twitter. First, we would have waited for the afternoon news update on TV. Second, we would not have immediate, reflexive reaction from so many Indigo readers that were tweeting and retweeting on the hijacking news.

And third, Roger couldn’t have taken such a delightful snapshot titled “the tweet meal.”
